Topic: Study on the Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) of Two-dimensional Electron Liquids on Surfaces of Complex Metal Oxides

Lecturer: Zhiming Wang

About the Lecturer: Zhiming Wang, researcher and doctoral supervisor, received his Bachelor’s Degree from Dalian University of Technology in 2006 and Doctor’s Degree from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2011. Wang conducted postdoctoral research at the Vienna University of Technology (Technische Universität Wien, Austria) from 2011 to 2014 and Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland) from 2014 to 2017, and joined the Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology of CAS in 2017. Wang was elected into Young Overseas High-level Talents Introduction Plan and CAS Hundred People Plan.

Wang’s research interest includes the precise preparation of new low dimension quantum materials and the research of new properties of low dimension quantum materials with scanning probe microscope, microscopy and X-ray electron spectroscopy. Wang has published 29 SCI papers, including some on academic journals such as Nat. Mater., Proc Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., Phys. Rev. Lett., Nano Lett., ACS Nano, Phys. Rev. B and Appl. Phys Lett. He is now in charge of the “Quantum Control and Quantum Information”, a national key R&D program, and Ningbo “3315” innovative team.

About the Lecture: Complex transition metal oxides are rich in quantum states due to the existence of multiple degrees of freedom, such as charge, spin, orbital, crystal lattice, and complex interactions between them. On its surface and interface, the “derivative” properties are different from their bodies due to quantum confinement effect and interfacial effect. This report focuses on two-dimensional electron liquids on the surfaces of complex metal oxides and will introduce the electronic structure of two-dimensional electronic liquids with ARPES and the control of the properties of the two-dimensional electron liquid on the atomic scale by regulation of the carrier concentration, crystal orientation and transverse quantum confinement effect. The report is divided into three parts:

(1) Change of electron- phonon coupling with electron concentration in two-dimensional electron liquids the on the surfaces of SrTiO3 (001);

(2) Anisotropic two-dimensional electronic liquids on the surface of SrTiO3 (110);

(3) A quasi one-dimensional electron liquid with transverse limitation on the surface of TiO2 (001). The surface superstructure is used to realize the further transverse limitation on the atomic scale of the two-dimensional electron liquids on metal oxides to form a quasi one-dimensional electron liquid.
